The 11th edition of Athens Digital Arts Festival will present a multidisciplinary programme, creating an ephemeral and dynamic public space in the historic building of Diplareios School in Theatre Square, Monastiraki Square and St. Eirini Square.
Under the theme of Public Space_s, the Festival seeks to highlight the various aspects of “public” both in the digital and physical space. In our times, the notion of public space appears to be one of the most contradictory concepts while the rise of network and communication technologies has changed our experience of public space. Public space is not only characterised by physical space and architecture but also by networks and knowledge distribution. While public space is mainly being interpreted through urban planning, digital public space is organised through IP locations, URLs and protocols. However, inhabiting at the same time a plethora of spaces that are potentially public the question that arises is: how open and free are these spaces? Have the visions regarding open access to public space and eventually public data been fulfilled?
Through this year’s programme, artists present different aspects and versions of public spaces by commenting on the conditions of the digital world, the infrastructure of contemporary cities and networks, new technologies and communication tools that affect public spaces, contemporary ethics, as well as issues that derive from modern experience.
